The 6th annual Irish Festival of Oulu returns with a variety of entertaining cultural events for all ages. Organised by The Irish Music Society of Oulu, the festival turns the city green celebrating the richness of Irish culture including theatre, poetry, film, dance, and plenty of music.
The dazzling festival line-up includes four distinguished Irish acts: Goitse, a rhythmic and entertaining band fast making a name for themselves; Guidewires, a band of superb skill known for their breathtaking arrangements and high octane performances; Alan Burke, a singer-songwriter who backs up his powerful voice with driving guitar rhythms; and Dervish, the legendary band lighting up stages all over the planet. Get ready for an amazing weekend of world class Irish music!
Cultural activities include a screening of The Pipe, a compelling documentary film about a small Irish community battling the might of Shell Oil Company. Director Risteard Ó Domhnaill will be hosting a discussion session afterwards. Writer and actor Donal O’ Kelly will perform his award-winning theatre piece Catalpa, an epic adventure that challenges the nature of heroism. Award-winning Irish poets Theo Dorgan and Paula Meehan will present their poetry. A new addition to the festival is choir music: Oulu’s own Cassiopeia choir will be performing new Irish-themed choir music, and County Limerick Youth Choir combines poetry and music in the piece ''Sibelius in Silence''.
The festival also features the talented local Irish bands Yläsiirtola Ramblers, Cascade and The Soap Pig. Come enjoy the lunch concerts, instrument workshops, the weekend dance course, Irish films, storytelling for both children and grown-ups, presentations, and daily traditional Irish music sessions open to everyone.
We welcome you to Oulu, Finland for the northernmost Irish festival in the world. The organisers thank our supporters, sponsors, and volunteers and wish everyone a memorable festival!
